Power Learn-N-Cruise Sample Itinerary (4.5 days)

This is a sample itinerary. For reasons of weather, current, or group preference your itinerary may vary. However, the intent is to spend your course exploring the San Juan Islands and take advantage of the myriad opportunities the islands provide to practice navigation, docking, anchoring, etc.

Day 1 - Sucia Island

Course begins at 9am. After loading gear, an introduction to your boat, and a review of safety procedures, you’ll head across Bellingham Bay to Lummi Island, then up scenic Hale Passage, to the most popular of the marine parks. Wander the scenic trails onshore or explore pebbly beaches lined with unique sandstone formations.

Day 2 - Roche Harbor or Friday Harbor

Roche Harbor is a historic and stately resort that provides an excellent place to practice close quarter docking and maneuvering skills. In addition, Roche Harbor Resort offers a restaurant/bar, cafe, a small grocery store, pool, and spa. Of interest nearby are a sculpture garden, distillery, and the unusual Afterglow Vista.

Friday Harbor gives you a taste of island village life. The largest town in the San Juan Islands, Friday Harbor offers shopping, a large grocery store, and plenty of restaurants to choose from. While there, consider a visit to the Whale Museum or rent mopeds to visit a lavender farm or winery.

Day 3 - Shaw Island or Spencer Spit

Blind Bay on Shaw Island is a quaint anchorage with a small general store and a quiet beach to walk on. Another option is Spencer Spit off Lopez Island, which offers a long sandy beach to explore and can have good crabbing during the season.

Day 4 - Cypress Island, Lummi Island (Inati Bay), Chuckanut Bay, or Pleasant Bay

Motor through Obstruction Pass or Peavine Pass, across Rosario Strait, to pick up a mooring buoy at Pelican Beach or anchor at Eagle Harbor or Deepwater Bay on Cypress Island. Explore the trails onshore or just relax and ponder the view of Mount Baker. Alternately, you might practice anchoring with a stern tie at Inati Bay, or head over to Chuckanut Bay or Pleasant Bay for an anchorage with a sunset view.

Day 5 - Bellingham

A morning motor across Bellingham Channel and then Bellingham Bay completes the island circuit, though truthfully you've sampled only a tiny sample of the delights of the San Juan Islands. Itinerary subject to change upon impulse with only delightful consequences. Back at the dock to fuel and unload gear, in time for the conclusion of the course at 12:30pm.
